This is the Danum Big Book everyone has been waiting for, a summary of the place and the research done in it since the foundation of Danum Valley Field Centre by Yayasan Sabah (The Sabah Foundation) and the start of overseas research by the SE Asia Rainforest Research Programme of the Royal Society of the UK in 1985. Contents are shown below. Natural History Publications (Borneo) have pulled out all the stops to publish high quality maps and photographs to supplement the text written by Hans Hasebroek and others. Hans had the almost impossible task of synthesising the research findings in a whole field of discliplines other than his own (geology) and has completed a job others feared to tackle.
At 568 pages and weighing in at 2.3kg this is a monster tome, and it will take a long time to assess its scientific worth, but at the least it gives an overview of a huge amount of research with 22 pages of references to original scientific papers. There is a checklist of animals, a full general index and another to scientific names. The book is notable for the number of full page colour photos of the fauna and flora as well as the scenery. Never before has a rain forest in SE Asia had a treatment to match the quality and span of this book.
The price of RM180 (USD60) makes this benchmark volume exceptionally good value – both a good serious read for the non-specialist and a wonderful source of reference for all.
