A safari along the wild Semadang River

WHERE TO MEET: Parking of Information Centre at Kampung Annah Rais
BACKGROUND
Together with Sungai Bengoh, which it joins south of Kampung Bengoh, Sungai Semadang is a main tributary of Sungai Sarawak Kiri. Not far from Kuching, the trip offers a glimpse of a unique way of life, in the midst of unspoilt nature, with beautiful landscapes and spectacular waterfalls on the Eastern flank of Gunung Penrissen and near the Indonesian border.
DESCRIPTION
For their last day trip before the AGM, the Kuching Branch of the Malaysian Nature Society are organising a safari along the wild Semadang River. It is an opportunity to experience the biodiversity of the hills around one of the sources of the mighty Sarawak River and to visit a few remote Bidayuh villages, which were not accessible by car until recently. The road ends at Kampung Sebakar, a traditional and hospitable village, which also offers a small but very pretty waterfall and cave. Half-way between Sebakar and Sadir, Kampung Simuti sits on top of an impressive staircase of 233 belian steps. There is a newly built parking halfway up the stairs, but the fittest among us will want to climb the whole staircase to enjoy slowly unfolding views of the jungle around the village. Kampung Simuti is a very lively place deserving a gentle stroll. If we are lucky, we may watch the local blacksmith making a parang. On the way back to Annah Rais, Kampung Sadir hosts a large school. A ten-minute walk through the school and along a shady stream will take us to a spectacular waterfall well frequented by school-children and teenagers. We will enjoy a cool dip and have a well- deserved picnic in the shade of the forest.
AGENDA
08h30: Meet on the car park at Kampung Annah Rais. Briefing by Georges Schneider, Safety by Kwan Cheong, Registering of name and car number by Cynthia Lobato. Signing of indemnity form.
09h00 sharp: Leave from the meeting point in a convoy and drive until the end of the road at Kampung Sebakar.
09h30: Regroup and park at the village hall from where we take a small path through the village to the waterfall a few minutes walk away. Be careful if you swim, because the pool is quite deep!
10h45: Drive back to Simuti and park either at the bottom of the staircase or midway up. Take a leisurely stroll in the village.
12h00: Drive back to Sadir and park in front of the school in Sadir. Walk to the waterfall. Take Group Photo before dipping in the pool.
13h30: Drive to Annah Rais, regroup to check-out, then drive back to Kuching. For your safety, the KBBG committee will not leave until all participants are checked out. Do not forget to reset the time in your mobile phones on your way back to Kuching!
HOW TO GET THERE
Kampong Annah Rais is at about one hour's drive from Kuching. Leave the Serian Road at Mile Ten and take the Penrissen Road. Half an hour later, pass the junction to Borneo Highland Resort and cross the Semadang River. Take a small road on the right after the bridge, follow the River to the South for about two km and arrive at Kampong Annah Rais.
From the parking at Annah Rais, we cross the River again over a Bailey Bridge and drive about 10 km to Sadir. Between Annah Rais and Sadir, we will be driving carefully on a poorly maintained road along a steep canyon. Just before Sadir we then take a small road on the right sign-posted to Sebakar, Simuti and Sibuang. After Sadir, the newly built road does not bring any difficulties.
FACILITIES
There is ample safe parking space at the village hall in Sebakar, at the bottom of the staircase in Simuti, and in front of the school in Sadir.
WHAT TO BRING
Please bring along your camera, binocular, pocket-size note pad, hat, flip-flops, raincoat, insect repellent, extra clothes, lots of water, pack-lunch or takeaway. Please remember to wear dull-coloured clothes.
FEES
Free for Members. Non-members may join the trip but will be required to pay RM5/-. Free for non-member students.
